Target smashed broadcasting for Africa
A 48-hour marathon effort to broadcast a charity radio station in the run-up to Christmas raised £5,000.
Café Africa in Chesham Road, Amersham, hosted a community radio station Radio Africa, drafting in wannabe DJs to entertain, in a bid to raise funds for Amersham charity African Link. The funds raised are set to help with the building of a school in Malawi.
The station broadcast from noon on December 22 until the same time on Christmas Eve to listeners in Amersham, Chesham, the Chalfonts, with youngsters aged from 12-years-old adding to the mix of music, chat and interviews.
Even people popping in for a coffee were invited to take part by having a go on the airwaves.
Organiser Duncan Dyason said: "It was a fantastic experience both for the young people and us old adults who got involved. In 48 hours we raised £3,500 online, with cash and cheques it went up to £4,100 and one of the owners of Café Africa put in the rest for us to reach our target of £5,000.
"I would like to thank the young people, adults and people who came into the café and had a go themselves at being a DJ. It was just a really festive event."
Mr Dyason, who raised £18,000 with a month-long Radio Christmas broadcasting project in 2008, said it will make a return this year and bookings are already being taken by those keen to have their own shows.
