Crown Court cases set to be heard in Amersham

TRIALS for serious offences could take place in Amersham after plans to hear Crown Court cases were unveiled.
A planning application for a major refurbishment to take place at The Court House, in King George V Road, has been submitted by The Ministry of Justice.

If the plans are given the go-ahead the court will have a single story extension and its roof will also be extended. Two jury retiring rooms will be created, three public interview rooms and six toilet cubicles will be constructed if the proposal is accepted by Chiltern District Council.
Currently the premises are used for Magistrates' hearings and inquests. It also houses Amersham Town Council.
The council will be affected by the changes while the work takes place and is currently searching for premises to house its office and conduct its meetings. Councillor Martin King, who is a member of a working party set up to look for a temporary base, said: "The town council will be moving. They are going ahead with the plans so we are looking around all over the place. We will be having a meeting with Chiltern District Council on Monday to look at the possibility of moving across to their offices."
An HMCS spokesperson said: "Her Majesty's Courts Service has submitted a planning application to convert the two courtrooms at Amersham Magistrates' Court into multi-purpose courtrooms that can be used for Crown and Magistrates' court work. This would help create greater flexibility in the way we deliver services to court users in the region.
She added: "We are working closely with town council staff based at the courthouse to find them temporary, alternative accommodation while the building work is taking place."
A decision on the plans is set to be taken in March.
