Land protected as village has a green
LITTLE Chalfont villagers are celebrating after being given an early Christmas present - a village green.
A hectare of land, known as Burton's Wood, in Burton's Lane, will be protected from development for future generations to enjoy after being officially registered.
The recognition follows an application made to Buckinghamshire County Council in February by resident Anabel Curry backed by Little Chalfont Community Association.
Land can be registered as a town or village green if it has been used by people for 'lawful sports and pastimes' for 20 years, freely and openly.
No one objected to the bid and the council's rights of way committee followed recommendations and registered the land.
Nicola Hodgson, case officer from conservation body The Open Spaces Society, which campaigns to protect such land and supported the application, said: "This is a wonderful outcome. That action has confirmed the rights of local people to use this area for quiet recreation, and it will protect the land from development.
"Mrs Curry gathered evidence to show that local people had used this small woodland for more than 20 years for informal recreation, without permission and without being challenged. This was a well-organised campaign by the applicant and local people, and the society congratulates them on their success."
Carol singing accompanied by the Amersham Music Centre brass ensemble is due to take place on the green on Saturday (19/12) between 11am and 12.30pm.
