MP nominated for award after autism law is passed
CHERYL Gillan MP has been nominated as a 'disability champion' after a law was passed following her campaign for improvements in care for Autism sufferers.
A Private Members Bill brought by the Chesham and Amersham representative in parliament became a law on Thursday and is now the Autism Act 2009.
She has expressed her delight at the bill receiving Royal Assent and has been nominated for the accolade which is part of the Charity Champion awards for Parliamentarians.
Mrs Gillan said: "I am so pleased on behalf of people with autism and their families that, with the support of Parliamentarians in both Houses and across party divides, this Bill has successfully made the transition into a law which can help change people's lives.
"I also want to thank the National Autistic Society who asked me to take up the Bill and whose staunch support has helped overcome the many hurdles which face a Private Member's Bill."
The Autism Act will guarantee the introduction of the first adult autism strategy, which sets out how services should be improved to meet the needs of adults with autism. It will cover a range of issues including health, social care, employment and training and will be accompanied by guidance which places a legal obligation on local authorities and NHS bodies to meet certain requirements.
In their award nomination, the National Autistic Society wrote: " The Autism Bill could transform the lives of millions of people with this serious, lifelong and disabling condition; Cheryl recognised this and has campaigned tirelessly for it to become a reality."
Mrs Gillan added: " It was a surprise to be nominated but I can only say that it really represents a chance to raise awareness of the ways to help individuals and families affected by autism."

This sounds like a press release from beginning to end.
Ordinary voters will judge local MP Gillan within months.
I think they will remember her dog food and second home and hubby-pay claims, her communications allowance, as much as her vague autism bill.
And verbatim press releases regarding her charitable works, reprinted in the Bucks Examiner.
She feathers her own nest(s). We pay.
