Cuts will have 'a bigger impact' than at other hospitals
HOSPITAL bosses have said a reduction in outpatient services at Amersham Hospital to will 'have a bigger impact' than at their other sites.
However they added that they believe 60 per cent of clinics will remain at the site in Whielden Street following the cost-saving shake-up.
This follows outcry by patients and councillors from Amersham, Chesham and surrounding areas who faced uncertainty on hearing of the proposals.
A Buckinghamshire Hospitals Trust NHS spokesperson said: "It is important that outpatient clinics are maintained across all three sites, but rather than running half-empty clinics we are looking at how we can combine resources to ensure they are better utilised into the future. It is really important to note that this is not about stopping any services; it is about making the best use of all our space and resources and offering value for money.
"The majority of outpatient clinics are held at our two main acute sites, Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe, and are linked to the medical and surgical specialities based there. Between them they see 80 per cent of all outpatient activity.
"Amersham Hospital is much smaller and therefore the reduction in referrals does have a bigger impact, however we believe that in total 60 per cent of clinics will be able to remain."
She added: "Our specialist dermatology service is based there and sees the most patients; this will continue, along with our physiotherapy, rheumatology, oral surgery, medicine for older people service (elderly), gastro, paediatrics, neurology and cardiology, plus support services such as phlebotomy, therapies and radiology."
The Trust previously stated it hopes to provide care closer to home 'within a GP or community setting'.
Last month we launched our Save our Services campaign to try to prevent clinics being moved away from Amersham Hospital. Are you affected? Let us know by emailing us
