New parking plans under fire
PLANS which propose to introduce pay-and-display parking in Amersham's main shopping area have come under fire.
Buckinghamshire County Council is currently consulting residents and business owners on the proposed introduction of the meters in Sycamore Road.
The scheme follows controversy surrounding the council's similar plans to introduce parking charges in currently unrestricted areas in Amersham Old Town.
Other plans include the introduction of pay-and-display meters in parts of King George V Road, Amersham between 8am and 6pm Monday to Saturday.
Waiting will be restricted in Sycamore Road, Station Road, Saxon Close, King George V Road and Hill Avenue.
Brian Woods, treasurer of Amersham Action Group said the organised has strong objections to the plans. He said: "We are concerned and continue to voice our opposition to the idea for paying to park on the streets. It would drive away shoppers from Amersham-on-the-Hill which has a lot of small shops.
"It is a worry because it tends to stifle what possible initiatives we are looking to improve the whole street scape in Sycamore Road."
The council states: "The purpose of this order is to improve the availability of parking in prime locations and to promote both road safety and traffic management.
"Buckinghamshire County Council and Chiltern District Council recognize that there are benefits in managing road space and improving turnover within parking bays. This can be achieved though a more efficient and effective way of enforcing short stay and dedicated on-street parking places."
Revenue from the scheme will contribute towards enforcement costs, it added.
Graeme Campbell, owner of The Record Shop in Woodside Road, has customers who park in nearby Sycamore Road.
Mr Campbell said: "We all need to be able to go to a town and get out for a short time and go - every town should have that facility."
"Amersham needs a lot of help at the moment. If we had a seriously vibrant town and shoppers were spending here I think there would be a good argument for it. It's in a rather bad state at the moment and I don't think introducing charges would help from a shoppers' or a retailers' point of view."
The consultation runs until December 3 and the full plans available via the council's website www.buckscc.gov.uk . What do you think of the new parking plans? Leave a comment below.
