Have a heart for new appeal

AN appeal to raise £40,000 for a piece of equipment to help the early detection of heart disease has been launched.
Fundraising charity Scannappeal officially marked the start of its HeartScan campaign to raise funds to start a cardiac imaging service at Amersham Hospital yesterday.

Balloons were released at the launch at the site in Whielden Street to remember the one in five men and one in six women who die from the disease.
Dr Soroosh Firoozan, a consultant cardiologist at the hospital said it currently has to rely on borrowing the equipment from Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury and Wycombe Hospital.
He said: "The machine will allow us to take moving pictures of the heart which can be reviewed by senior people in Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville which will mean the patient gets more information quickly. We need this machine as it will mean we can investigate patients who live around here locally. We will also be able to treat a lot more people because the capacity will be increased."
An extra 1,600 scans will be able to be carried out each year with the new equipment, the charity estimates.
Amersham Town Councillor Davida Allen, who attended the launch, said: "Heart disease is so prevalent in society. We need to be aware of it and that is why I am here, to try to make people more aware of it."
The charity plans to hold a 'Frugal Fashion' event on November 5 to raise funds for the cause. People with unwanted party outfits are being sought to sell them at the event. donating half of the proceeds to Scannappeal. The event, which takes place between noon and 7pm at Amersham Hospital, will also feature stalls, beauty seminars and a bra fitting service.
