Raising alarming issue of climate change
MOBILE phones were hoisted into the air and alarms set off in Amersham this week as part of a global campaign to raise awareness of climate change.
A group of climate change protesters, led by Russ Fleming, set their mobile phone alarms for 12.18pm on Monday in the hope of providing the political parties with a wake up call in the Old Town.
International civic organisation Avaaz arranged the protests which took place at 2,300 locations in 130 countries across the world.
As the alarms went off, protesters raised their alarms into the air with Mr Fleming outlining the dangers of climate change through a loudspeaker before the group sung Beatles hit Hey Jude and marched in circles.
The precise time of the protest was meant to mark a meeting in Copenhagen on December 18 which will see world leader's come together to try and tackle the issue.
Mr Fleming said: "What we hoped to have evoke with this demonstration is that we can all make a difference. In the coming months we hope to encourage lots of the local businesses in Chesham and Amersham to sign up to our scheme.
"This world is in our custody and we are ruining it. We need to make changes and we need to make them now."
Mr Fleming is hoping to set up regular protests in Amersham and Chesham. Anyone interested should email him on russ.fleming@virgin.net.
