Couple celebrate 60th wedding anniversary

SIXTY years ago Ken Larner met the love of his life - problem was he was on a date with her friend at the time.
Mr Larner, 82, was preparing for a date but needed to find a girl to accompany his friend and make it a foursome.
His date, Joan, then made a telephone call that was to change his life forever and invited her friend Dot to join the trio at the pictures in their home town of Harrow, north-west London.
Ten weeks later Mr Larner and Dot married and last Thursday celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary at their home in Orchard Avenue, Holmer Green.

Mrs Larner, 81, said: "Six weeks after we met we were engaged and then a month later we were married.
"My friend rang me to ask if I would come along to the pictures on a blind date and then it just went from there.
"The funny thing was that we arranged our first proper date and then Ken's mother rang me to tell me that he had to cancel because he had chicken pox.
"I thought it might not be true but he actually did have it and we re-arranged and the rest is history.
Mr Larner was working in the war office in London at the time the pair met while Mrs Larner was employed with the Land Army.
Mr Larner, said: "We just both hit off straight away even though we were on dates with other people at the time.
"It is funny because at the time some people were telling us it would never last because it was so quick and because it was a blind date.
"Maybe we are still waiting to see if it will last. I had to act fast because I did not want anyone else snapping her up."
The couple had two children, David, 56, and Carol, 53, and have four grandchildren.
Mrs Larner said: "We celebrated by going out for a special dinner on Wednesday and we will be having a special party once our son can make it down from Blackpool."
And as for the secret to sixty years of wedded bliss Mr Larner said: "I think it is all about sharing everything and being open and honest."
