Pupil picks up GCSE results a month after brain tumour operation
FOR one Amersham School pupil constant headaches and nausea during his exams made GCSEs an uphill struggle.
Weeks after taking the exams George Von Kutzleben was given life-changing news when he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour.
The 16-year-old from Chesham Bois, who did not know what was making him ill during his exams, had to have a major operation to remove the tumour on July 29.
He said: "I found out afterwards what was making me ill throughout the exams. I suppose it affected my grades because my doctor told me it could affect my memory."
Despite his illness George, who has to walk with the aid of a stick and wear an eye patch - picked up one A grade, three Bs, three Cs, and two Ds. His efforts have allowed him to return to Amersham School next term to study physics, chemistry and maths in the sixth form - a step towards on the ladder towards his dream of a career in science.
His mother, Jacqueline Von Kutzleben, shed tears of happiness when her son was able to open his results today at the school in Stanley Hill.
She said: "He was ill for about six weeks before and we didn't know what was wrong. As soon as he was diagnosed we were straight up the John Radcliffe Hospital where he had brilliant treatment. He's going to have a gruelling year with courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It has put everything in perspective but he has been very positive. You try not to wrap him up in cotton wool but you know what mothers are like.
"I am just glad he has got the results to get into the sixth form so our lives can get back to normal."
The teenager is due to begin radiotherapy in the next few weeks, which will be planned to take place during afternoons, to allow him to attend school in the mornings. He will then have to face three sessions of chemotherapy.
Other pupils at Amersham School celebrated as 55 per cent of them achieved five A* to C grades including core subjects English and maths.
Lauren Fairhurst, 16, of Chesham, scooped eight As, one B and one C. The teenager, who plans to return to the school next term, said: "I am really happy. I totally thought I had failed everything. Some of the exams were really hard, especially English and Music as that 's what I would like to do in the future."
Another high flyer was Holly O'Connell, 16, of Chesham, who waited two and a half hours to find out she had gained one A*, six As, one B and two Cs. She said: "I am so relieved. I had a really bad night last night. I had two friends over and we were up most of the night worried. Holly, who hopes to eventually go to university to study English literature, plans to return next year to take AS levels in chemistry, biology, maths and English literature."
Headteacher Sharon Jarrett said she was 'delighted' with the results. She said: "Our successful students have worked incredibly hard and have aspired to being the best that they can possibly be. I am immensely proud that so many have achieved such wonderful grades.
"Many of our students are now going on to study A-levels here, knowing that we will work with them to ensure that they fulfil their potential."
