Residents debate Tesco wind turbine plan
A supermarket giant is proposing to change the face of picturesque Old Amersham and it's all in the cause of becoming more environmentally friendly.
Tescos, in the London Road, has submitted an ambitious blueprint to the district council for a futuristic wind turbine which would enable the store dramatically to reduce its carbon emissions.
The company's commitment to a sounder environmental policy is being rolled out nationwide, but Tescos is not releasing any information about what it will cost to build the turbine.
The project, as elucidated, envisages a 10.6 metres high and 3.3 metres wide tower, to accommodate the turbine, and this would be built in the car park of the Old Amersham store.
Residents have a chance to comment in detail about the plans, with objections possible until a proposed cut off date of Monday, April 27.
The planning application will be considered during the late spring or early summer by Chiltern District Council's planning committee, and, if successful, Tescos hopes the turbine will be working by the autumn of this year.
Felix Gummer, Regional Corporate Affairs Manager for Tescos, told The Examiner: "This is part of our commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of our existing stores by 50 per cent by 2020.
"To help us meet this important target we are reviewing our existing stores and distribution centres across the UK to identify those suitable for renewable energy technology.
"The wind turbines are second generation vertical turbines and differ from the three-bladed structures that most people are familiar with.
"These turbines are of a similar height to a lamppost fitting well with their surroundings and unlike other wind turbines operate just above a whisper.
"The renewable electricity produced will be fed directly back into the store, reducing its consumption of conventionally produced electricity."

Journalists always abbreviate things in headlines, but if you want to criticise the piece, then complain about the fact it doesn't say how, when or where we can debate it, who to send comments to etc. (I'm sure it's CDC, but it woudl be better journalism to say so and to give an email address etc.)
