Amersham School pupils to take GCSE exams early
Students at Amersham School will be able to start their GSCEs a year early in a bid to improve results.
The school in Stanley Hill has spent the past two years looking into ways of making its education more progressive and has come up with a new unique curriculum.
Sharon Jarrett said: "I believe that it is imperative that students enjoy school and are excited about their studies. Our new curriculum allows for this, whilst also ensuring that every child fulfills their academic potential."
The school will enabling students to select GCSE courses in year 8, to start their examination pathway a year in advance of what is usual. This creative programme has been strategically planned to engage the students in their learning and to meet individual need. The purpose is to raise standards in GCSEs by giving pupils more time to reach their potential. All students will complete GCSEs in English language, English literature, maths, science and IT. In year 9 and 10 they will complete two further GCSE subjects before starting an individual learning plan in year 11. The programme in year 11 may involve starting an A level, or may focus upon a particular subject such at ICT, business or even sport, or it may be a selection of further GCSE subjects. This will depend upon the individual student, their interests and their learning needs.
Stuart Taylor, Assistant headteacher said; "At Amersham School we are committed to enabling our students to be the very best that they can possibly be. Our students are talented and very able - we wanted to provide a curriculum that allows each individual to achieve at the highest level whilst remaining engaged and passionate about their learning. The staff at Amersham School have been fully involved in the planning and preparation for such changes and we are all very excited."
