KIDS at an Amersham School have taken the chequered flag in a national Christmas fun race which got them to exercise Formula One-type logical skills.
The winning quartet at Woodside Junior School in Mitchell Walk were Charlie Hardy, Sarah Platts, David Blight and Joseph Gocher and the event was billed as the Jaguar Cars Maths in Motion Challenge.

STAFF at Tesco in Old Amersham donned pirate garb and raised more than £1,000 for the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity.
All 300 employees took part in the pirate day on December 19 which raised funds for Tesco's charity of the year by staff using a rowing machine.

Amersham Organ Museum open day

The Amersham Fair Organ Museum is holding an open day on January 11.
The museum in Plantation Road will be open from 11am-5pm.

ENTHUSIASTIC teenager Katie Nash, will dedicate six months of her time towards helping to look after sick and abandoned children in South Africa.
Christian Katie, 18, who lives in Little Chalfont, has just helped to raise £1,000 for the Johannesburg-based Love of Christ Ministries orphanage courtesy of a successful Christmas Fair.

The Amersham-Krynica Twinning Association is looking for new members.
Krynica is a spa town in Poland, located near the border with neighbouring Slovakia.
It has been twinned with Amersham since 2003.
In May 2009 a party from Amersham will visit Poland for a multi-town festival which will also involve Bardejov in Slovakia and Gorlice in Poland.
The group will hold a social evening on Friday, January 16, at The Polish Club in Raans Road, starting at 8pm. Anyone interested in joining should call 01707 659091.

WOOLWORTHS in Amersham will close it's doors for the last time on Tuesday, December 30.
Administrators at Woolworths announced on Monday (22/12) the closing dates for all of the 807 stores across the county. All stores will close by January 5.

Slim for Scannappeal

IF your New Year Resolution is going to be to lose weight, then why don't you shed lbs and raise £££'s for cancer patients in South Bucks!
Scannappeal, based at Amersham Hospital, is running its third annual sponsored slim in aid of its Cancer Fighting Fund. This Appeal is for state-of-the-art equipment to detect cancer, and for the treatment of cancer patients in the Buckinghamshire area.

My Amersham: Raymond Norris

Am-My-Town-Norris.jpgRetired chartered surveyor Raymond Norris, 81, of Copperkins Lane, has lived in Amersham since 1965. Born in Berkhamsted, Mr Norris has travelled extensively particularly in the Far East.

Q: What do you think of Amersham?
A:
It is a marvellous place and has a tremendous amount going for it. It's location is very good. It is handy for London but we are still in the country.

Firefighters led 10 people to safety after a fire in a block of flats cut off their main escape route.

They were called to Park Place in Amersham at 4.03am on Saturday by a quick-thinking occupant, who managed to evacuate one of the 12 flats before they arrived.

Plans for the possible construction of a new bowls club pavilion in Hervines Park will be studied in detail during 2009.
The subject was discussed at December's meeting of Amersham Town Council's finance and general purposes committee.
The bowls club were intent on financing the idea themselves and it was stressed that they would seek to fund the project from grant making trusts and donations.
