A Capella gets an A star
The Amersham A Capella all-women chorus were obviously all singing from the same song sheet at the Ladies Association of Barbers Shops Singers' convention, as the 40-strong choir came home clutching two medals.
A Capella, which means to sing without accompaniment, wowed their audience with a medley of Frank Sinatra songs and a moving rendition of One Alone from the musical The Desert Song, for which songs they won a bronze medal, competing against 21 other barbers shop choruses.
A Capella's quartet, Noteorious, added to the chorus' success by winning the gold medal in the national quartet competition at the same event, in which they tested their tonsils in competition with 11 other singing foursomes.
A Capella member, Joanna Birtles, who lives in Amersham, said" "We sang our hearts out in the huge Harrogate convention centre. What a fantastic weekend. "
She said everyone was really proud to have come home with two medals and described their rendition of One Alone as "skin-tingling".
Ms Birtles added that barbers shop-style singing is a team game and that after a long, hard day, it is a wonderful way to unwind.
She said: "Singing releases endorphins (feel-good hormones), improves breathing and helps you towards a healthy heart. A rehearsal session can have the same effect as a good work-out.
"Singing in four parts creates a wonderful exhilarating, uplifting sound which can be made quiet and deeply moving or bolder and exciting, but always beautiful."
A Capella meets each Tuesday evening at 7.45 in St Michael and All Angels Church hall, Sycamore Road, Amersham. For information on joining A Capella, to book them for an event or for details of their forthcoming concerts, go to www.amershamacappella.com.
