No stripper promise by pub landlord
A landlord has assured customers his village pub will not become a strip joint after an application was submitted to remove the no nudity clause.
Bob Pugsley, landlord of the Chequers in Old Amersham, was shocked to find a request for the removal of smoking conditions was included with a number of other variations - including the removal of no nudity - because of the change in licensing laws in 2003.
This has led the focus of the application, due to be discussed by Chiltern District Council's licensing committee tonight, to be on the removal of the nudity clauses. The police have even submitted a two page document detailing measures to be taken to ensure the safety of the dancers.
Mr Pugsley said: "This is a family pub and we will not be having that type of sordid thing in here I can assure you. The last thing we want is our customers to think that type of thing will be going on here. All I wanted was to remove the smoking restrictions but it came under this long list. This has come about because of these new licensing laws. People came and spoke to us about the smoking but no-one mentioned this no nudity clause."
Mr Pugsley has been struggling since the no smoking ban was brought in because a clause in his licence says his customers cannot go outside after 10pm, leaving many with no choice but to go home if they want to smoke. These measures are designed to protect neighbours from late night noise.
He said: "I've got 85-year-old men here who can't have a simple smoke on his pipe after 10pm. He is saying he didn't fight in the war just to be given an early curfew.
"We have very few neighbours and most of them drink in here anyway. It is ridiculous that on a summer's evening, they cannot go outside for a quiet drink after 10pm."
He feels he is being unfairly tarnished by the trouble that has been occurring in the centre of Old Amersham and says being based in London Road West means he should not be grouped with other pubs.
A decision on his request will be made tonight at 6.30pm at the district council offices in King George V Road, Amersham.
The council were unavaliable for comment.
